Bengale D’Automne

Bengale roses were brought to Europe by the East India Company thanks to its many maritime trading posts. The importance of these centres has been highlighted through the name given to some varieties, for example the Bourbon rose for the trading post in Bourbon Island and the Bengal rose (or Rosa indica) for the trading post in Calcutta in India

Bengale dAutomne was immortalised by Pierre-Joseph Redout in 1824 in the third volume of the famous collection Les Roses (portrait 162/170) under the name Rosa indica Automnalis.

In Les Roses de lImpratrice Josphine, Jules Gravereaux states that this variety was obtained from seed by Dr Cartier, who allegedly sent it to Redout.
