Roses in the Cold
Monday, January 4th, 2010I am finally going to try to start blogging every other day or so just to get in the habit. There is so much I want to say about the roses.
Right now I would like to report that it got down to 23 degrees last night (unusual for our part of Florida). We just finished putting the rest of the plastic on our new greenhouse (Victorian Conservatory) yesterday. I spent 2 days sorting out the really young quarts of baby roses to go into the greenhouse. Without any heat in there it was still 60 degrees last night when I went in. The sides are glass windows, the roof is Lexan and the upper and bottom is greenhouse plastic. We found a roll of it brand new that we bought over 4 years ago and never used. Thanks Goodness we had it! The floor is made of brick pavers we had left over from a job. I am planning to water by hand
Today at 12:00 noon the shadier part of the nursery had icecicles on the roses! It was sunny and warm everywhere else in the yard. Go figure! Of course the greenhouse roses were happy and laughing in their warmth. But many rose blooms were not even damaged from the cold. This really blows me away that these roses can take so much cold. More tomorrow
